Cops: New Haven Teen Had "Homemade" Gun
Tip led to teen's arrest Sunday afternoon, police said.
A New Haven teenager was arrested Sunday on charges he was in possession of a homemade firearm.
Police got a report of suspicious activity at a Grandview Avenue home at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith. The tip included information that someone in the home had a gun, he said.

When officers arrived, they saw three people go into the home, he said, and they found one of them, a 17-year-old New Haven resident, with eight .22 caliber bullets in his pocket.
"Moments later, Officer Mark Sheppard observed a “home-made handgun” in the area of an enclosed porch," Smith said in the email release. "The handgun was loaded with a 12 gauge shell. Officers had to completely disassemble the firearm to retrieve the shotgun shell and make the firearm safe."

The 17 year-old was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, Smith said. He was released to a relative and is scheduled to appear at Juvenile Court in New Haven on Sept. 26.
Officers William Iannone and Mark Sheppard conducted the investigation, Smith said.
