Couple Accused of Child Abuse

Two-year-old boy hospitalized with serious injuries in September; returning home would have put him in "imminent danger of dying," according to police.

A Hamden woman and her boyfriend were arrested last week on child abuse charges after the woman's two-year-old son was hospitalized in September with what police said could have been life-threatening injuries.

On Sept. 28, police were called to the couple's home at 42 Warner St., Apt. 89 on the report of a sick child, police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith said. The boy was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Smith said, where medical personnel found injuries consistant with abuse.

The next day, Det. Stephen Rossacci of the Hamden Police Department Special Victims Unit met with Yale – New Haven Hospital medical personnel, as well as the Department of Children and Families, Smith said.

Rossacci learned that the 2 year-old, who was being treated at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit after emergency surgery, had suffered "substantial injuries," Smith said.

"The 2 year-old, who was severely dehydrated, had extensive bruising to the head, chest, abdomen and back, as well as a fractured femur," Smith said. "Furthermore, the child had sustained trauma to the liver and pancreas. In addition, skin had peeled from the buttocks areas, due to severe diaper rash.

"Physicians determined that the child was the victim of suspected child abuse and that if he returned home, would be in imminent danger of dying," he said.

Rossacci investigation led to the arrests of the boy's mother, Mariangely Arroyo-Rosado, and her boyfriend, Bevon Young, her boyfriend. They were both arrested on Dec. 8 at their residence.

Arroyo-Rosado, 27, and Young, 26, both were charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor. Both were held in lieu of $50,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 20.
