Hamden Residents Active in ECSU Activities

Maurice Sutton '14, is a member of the Organization for Latin American Students (OLAS) at Eastern Connecticut State University. Sutton is a Sociology major.

The purpose of OLAS is to assist in the educational success of Latinos on Eastern's campus and to inform the campus community about the Hispanic culture. OLAS was active this past fall as six members attended the Latinos in Higher Education Conference at Central Connecticut State University in November. Ten OLAS members attended the Riverfront Recapture Retreat in Hartford, and more than 20 members participated in a presentation on campus in October by INROADS, a Hartford-based nonprofit agency committed to providing underserved youth with career services. The club also sponsored a fundraiser in October, selling "Limbel," a Latino frozen fruit juice dessert.

Reginald Avelino '14, is a member and secretary of Eastern's Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). Avelino is majoring in Computer Science. 

AITP's mission is to give individuals in the Business Information Systems and Computer Systems programs and courses an opportunity to gather information regarding developments in the Information Systems and Technology fields, in their future careers, and facilitate professional networking. Guest speakers provide opportunities to learn about new system and technology practices.

AITP also provides information to Eastern students on advancing technology and business skills, leadership development opportunities, networking, peer mentoring and knowledge sharing, and online resources available through AITP.

Lesly Damour '14, a Computer Science major, is a member of MALES, which creates programs and activities that will benefit Eastern and its student body by supporting the community service projects and other events presented by already-established organizations on campus. MALES intends to improve the image, leadership qualities, and communication skills of the Eastern Connecticut State University man.

MALES student club was active this past semester, conducting a downtown cleanup day in September; hosting a presentation on campus in October by INROADS, a Hartford-based nonprofit agency committed to providing underserved youth with career services; and holding the 11th Annual M.A.L.E.S. Banquet in November.

Several Hamden residents are members of the FEMALES club at Eastern Connecticut State University, including:

Janell Lewis, '14, a Psychology major and secretary of the club;

Olivia Cameron '15, a Psychology major;

Chanelle Howell '14, a Communications major;

Cassidy Spencer '15, who has not yet declared a major;

The mission of FEMALES is to promote unity, leadership and sisterhood among women attending Eastern Connecticut State University by means of sponsoring and attending workshops, lectures, seminars, local and national conventions. FEMALES hopes to build the character of women, improve their self-esteem, and provide them with the necessary resources to empower themselves and achieve success in their future endeavors. The members of FEMALES were active this past fall semester, sponsoring a fundraising walk for Crohn's and Colitis on Oct. 2; an event on Nov. 21 to raise awareness about obesity; and a trip to New York City on Dec. 3.

Jonathan Mandell '15, is a member of Eastern's Pre-Law Society. Mandell is a Political Science major.

The purpose of the Pre-Law Society is to provide information and resources for students interested in the field of law. During the fall semester, the club worked with Eastern's Office of Institutional Advancement to bring three alumni back to campus to speak to students about law careers. Alumni included Michael Endler, a partner at Boies, Schiller and Flexner; Bridget Gallagher, a partner at Brown, Paindiris and Scott; and Louis Pace, chief clerk of the Judicial District of Danbury.
