UPDATE: "No One Liked" Princess, So Owner Stabbed Her 29 Times

8-month-old Staffy recovering from wounds; owner facing charges.

Princess, an eight-month-old Staffordshire Terrier, allegedly was stabbed by her owner "because no one in his family liked the dog," according to police.

The dog suffered 29 stab wounds after the attack Wednesday at a Dixwell Avenue residence, Capt. Ronald Smith said.

The dog's owner, Alexander Bernard, 25, of 257 Sheffield Ave., New Haven, was charged with cruelty to animals. He was held in lieu of $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court June 8.

Princess was found lying in a pool of blood in the driveway of the home at 1061 Dixwell Ave., Smith said, and the 3" knife Bernard allegedly used was lying near the dog.

"Officers learned that the reason he allegedly stabbed the dog multiple times was because no one in his family liked the dog," Smith said.

Princess was taken to North Haven Animal Hospital, where she is recovering and is listed in stable condition.

"The injured dog sustained 29 stab wounds. The wounds were located in the area of the chest, abdomen and neck," Smith said. "North Haven Animal Hospital personnel advised Hamden Police that the dog lost a significant amount of blood. The dog is in stable condition."

Hospital personnel refused to comment on the dog's condition Friday, referring comment to police.
