CT Grown for CT Kids Week to be Held September 30 - October 4

Student Lunch Menus in Several CT Districts to Offer Locally Grown Produce and Other Food Products

Officials from the School Nutrition Association of Connecticut (SNACT) will participate in CT Grown for CT Kids Week, running from September 30 - October 4, 2013. Throughout this week, while student lunch menus will continue to offer healthy and wholesome foods, they will all have originated from local farms and will include vegetables, fruits and farm raised meats. In addition, several local businesses throughout the state will also contribute to the menu. Some of the items include Red Door calzones, Carla’s tortellini, Jamaican beef patties, Ragozzino sauce, and Miller Farms turkey roasts.

“We are thrilled to be celebrating CT Grown for CT Kids Week and applaud our State’s efforts in embracing the importance of offering healthy, locally grown and produced food products,” said Sandra Sullivan, Food and Nutrition Services director of New Milford.

CT Grown for CT Kids Week is a statewide celebration that brings school children together with Connecticut farms, farmers, and Connecticut agriculture. The week is sponsored by Connecticut’s Farm to School Program, which is a coordinated initiative of the State Department of Agriculture and the State Department of Education.

“I applaud our State and local food service directors for continuing to provide ways in which we can include local produce in our student’s menus,” said Trish Molloy, President of SNACT.  “This showcases our Association’s commitment towards providing meaningful ways to provide the very best for our students.”
