Hamden Youth Advisory Council Marks Positive Choices Week

In observance of Alcohol Awareness Month in April, Hamden Youth Advisory Council (HYAC)’s Positive Choices campaign to prevent underage drinking and drug use will promote activities during Hamden’s Positive Choices Week, April 21-27

During the week, “positive” events are being held to encourage all Hamden youth and their families to learn and grow in positive ways and to make “Positive Choices” to live a lifestyle free from the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Sunday, April 21:
 “PowerTalk 21” Day, the annual day for parents to talk with their kids about underage drinking. Learn more by visiting http://www.madd.org.

Monday, April 22:
 Hamden High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) monthly meeting; HHS SADD chapter is instrumental in delivering the Campaign’s youth to youth messages.

Tuesday, April 23:
 (During School Day) Presentation from Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to Hamden Middle School students with participation from the HHS SADD Chapter talking to 8th graders about alternatives to drinking.  Contact: Allison Champlin, Program Specialist (203) 764-2566. 

Evening at 7:00 p.m.
: Presentation by National Elks Drug Awareness Program spokesperson and motivational youth speaker Milton Creagh, who will discuss consequences of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. No fee, sponsored and funded by the CT Elks Association DAP and hosted by Hamden Lodge 2224, upper hall, 175 School Street at 7:00 p.m. Contact Elks Drug Awareness Chair Brenda Davis at (203) 915-7135.

Wednesday, April 24:
 (During School Day) Presentations from Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to Hamden Middle School. Contact: Allison Champlin, Program Specialist (203) 764-2566. 

Girls Circle will hold their meeting. Girls Circle is a structured support group for Hamden Middle School girls, which provides a safe and comfortable environment to share thoughts, feelings, and experiences.  Contact: Beth Chiarillo (203) 777-2610 ext. 137.

Thursday, April 25 
at 5:00 p.m.: HYAC Awards Ceremony will be held in Room C107 at Hamden High School to recognize leadership, service and commitment to youth within the Hamden community. The winners of the Hamden Youth Services Pencil Slogan and Poem Contest will also be recognized. Contact: Beth Chiarillo (203) 777-2610ext. 137.

 7:00 p.m. : “The Power of Parents” workshop hosted by M.A.D.D., which equips Hamden parents with the resources and tools for talking with their teens about underage drinking in the auditorium of Hamden Middle School located at 2623 Dixwell Ave. All Hamden parents are welcome and there is no fee to attend this workshop. Friday, April 26:
 The Superintendent’s Student of the Month recognized.

Saturday, April 27:
 “Walk Like MADD” fundraiser held in Southington. Hamden residents are encouraged to join the HHS SADD chapter as they participate.
