Lack of Snow Doesn't Stop Blizzard Blast

Eleven packs of Cub Scouts participate at the YMCA's Camp Sloper last month.

Cub Scouts from 11 Packs participated in the annual Blizzard Blast at YMCA Camp Sloper in Southington on Feb. 18.

More than 150 Cubs in the Sleeping Giant District, including boys in grades 1-5 from Southington, Meriden, Hamden, North Haven and Wallingford, participated in a series of round robin outdoor events that incorporate skills and games.

Despite the lack of snow, these winter activities included sled racing, sling shot shooting, racing with skis built for four people, snowshoeing on the grass and other relay races.

There was also a display by the First Maryland Civil War reenactment group.

The day started with an opening ceremony and scavenger hunt.  Twenty volunteers from five Boy Scout Troops (young men ages 11-18) and one Venture Crew (co-ed ages 14-20) from the area assisted with the stations.  Some of the Boy Scouts also spent the entire weekend winter camping at Camp Sloper.
