League of Women Voters Hosts Symposium on Global Media

Will be held in May at Sacred Heart University.

 

The League of Women Voters of Connecticut is gearing up for its spring symposium that will look at global media news coverage.

LWVCT sponsors two major conferences a year, the Symposium on International Relations in the spring and the Fall Conference. The spring 2012 Symposium, Globalizing the Media: Where in the World is the Truth?,   will be held May 15 at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, with speakers from the New York Times Radio, the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, and from the production and writing end of television.

Hamden-North Haven League member Caroline Bridgman-Rees is a longtime member of the Symposium on International Relations organizing committee.

LWVCT has been sponsoring the Symposium since 1969. The Symposium is held on a weekday to make it available also to high schools. Students from 18 high schools around the state, including form Amity, Cheshire, Hamden, North Haven, and West Haven have attended the Symposium, which is held at different locations.

At its Feb. 14 meeting, the LWVCT board chose “Food” as the subject for the League’s Fall Conference and appointed Elona Vaisnys of the Hamden-North Haven League to the organizing committee. The Fall Conference will be October 27, at a location to be announced.

Walter Mann, Executive Director of NHTV/North Haven Community Television and North Haven Government TV (Comcast 20, AT&T 99) announced that NHTV will air the 2011 League fall conference Back in Business: Workforce Development for Connecticut's Economic Future from Feb. 24 through March 1 at 6 a.m., 11 a.m., 4 p.m., 8 p.m., and 1 a.m. One presenter at that conference, Joseph Carbone, President and CEO of The WorkPlace in Bridgeport, was featured on CBS's "60 Minutes" on Feb. 19.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, policy-oriented organization that works to increase understanding of major public policy issues. It also seeks to influence public policy through education and advocacy and encourages informed and active participation in government.
