Potholes: Where in Hamden Are They?

Today is the first day of spring, which means it's pothole season -- post here to let Public Works know where the worst are in your neighborhood.

Despite the fact that we had a virtually snow-free winter, the town's streets have still taken a beating over the winter and with spring comes pothole season.

Potholes appear when the pavement cracks, moisture builds up in the crack and then freezes and thaws. It's a problem that the town really can't avoid.

Potholes can be a year-long problem but are especially noticable in the spring after streets are plowed and sanded over the winter. While the areas for the most part escaped severe winter weather, there still are sections of roads that look like they've been chewed up and are in need of repair.

Do you have bad potholes in your neighborhood? Post the locations here and if you can, snap a picture and upload it here too (but be safe while taking pictures!). Public Works can't fix what they aren't aware of, so a running list of potholes can help them locate problem spots.

And Happy Spring!

Anti government?? Tea party?? Nope proud liberal!! It sounds like you have your head in the sand or maybe you just happen to live on one of the "preferred" streets where someone knows someone. Everyone else listed here does not. We do what we should by paying our taxes but we are not afforded what those taxes are suppose to bring us. I have been paying my taxes to Hamden for over 20 years I don't think its aking too much to be able to drive up and down my own street without breaking something on my car. Hamden is a good town that's why I live here but I don't have to agree with how things are handled and speaking up makes a better town for all of us! If you have a problem with that maybe you should go to Detroit.
Dan Garrett March 26, 2012 at 09:51 PM
Pretty sure the first line that you read said I think Hamden is a fine town, no I don't want to live in Detroit. I understand towns throughout the country are having major difficulties. My street and the area I live in has roads that need repairs. I am more concerned that my tax dollars are dedicated at keeping our Hamden schools as fine as they are. Your screen name dontpaytaxes sounds very anti government and far right.

Agree 100%! Seems everything around us has been repaved yet we keep getting a quick fix that seems to make it worse.

I also live on Renshaw Rd. I have had to call numerous times to have Public Works come and patch very large pot holes.I must say they do come and fix them in a timely manner. The problem is they use cold patch and after a few cars drive over it it's pretty much back to the way it was. I don't blame PW they are working with what they have, The road cannot be repaired any longer it needs to be paved. I took pictures of the road and brought them personally to the Mayors office. I was told what we all have been told for years "Renshaw is on the list and will be evaluated". Roads are not only based on how bad they are but how frequently they are traveled. Renshaw is a small street but everyone from Sherman Avenue Ext, and Hampshire Rd all use Renshaw to get out onto Whitney Avenue because no one can get out on Sherman. Quinnipiac Students also cut down Sherman and use Renshaw to get out onto Whitney Ave. There is a lot of traffic that no one who didn't live in our neighborhood would know. I feel you Staymoose!

Peggy Wintergreen Ave. - from Brook all the way th the New Haven line. Been this way since the storm at the end of the summer with the heavy rain. This whole street needs to be repaved. Some patching has been done in spots - a good rain undermines the patches and we're back to square one. Walking where there aren't any sidewalks is taking your life in your hands to avoid the cars swerving to avoid the pot holes. PLEASE someone get the repaving done!!
Renshaw April 10, 2012 at 06:03 PM
I came home last week to Renshaw Road and now on top of weaving in and out trying to avoid numerous holes, cracks and broken road we now have a huge bump in the middle of the road thanks to the Regional Water Authority. How is it they can rip up the road and just leave it like this for us to have to deal with?? Picture is above along with all the sand they dumped. Our choice now is to drive over a large hump in the road or drive through a portion of the road that is pretty much rubble. Additionally we have no sidewalks and no curbs so to avoid things in the road people drive over our lawn. So much for trying to keep your house looking nice. Something needs to be done please!!
Don Charles April 10, 2012 at 07:37 PM
You people should spend as much time complaining about potholes in doing something worthwhile like working to rid us of the present Washington administration. The Obama machine and all his sleazes are killing the USA and you people complain about potholes!!! What a shame some people don't pay attention to the really important problems we have.
Rick April 11, 2012 at 12:37 AM
If you feel that way Mr. Charles why are you wasting your time on a Hamden site pertaining to potholes. Are you taking a break from Fox News or do you prefer Rush and Beck?!! And just so you know, I for one can multi-task I can comment on here and I can help Obama get re-elected because unlike you I rather have a Democrat in the White who will watch out for my wife and daughter's health and and not try and strip them of their rights like Republicans do, I also like a person in the white house who has had 26 months of job growth unlike the previous idiot we had for president who got us into 2 wars that weren't paid for along with adding prescriptions meds for seniors he also didn't pay for. I can go on and on but I have a feeling my breath is being wasted on you. Willard Mitton Romney yeah that's what we all need..Say goodbye to social secrity, medicare, medicaid and the middle class! OBAMA 2012!!!!!!
Don Charles April 11, 2012 at 03:16 AM
Rick says "Say goodbye to social secrity, medicare, medicaid and the middle class" This is the biggest laugh I have had in ages. Rick you are a total fool when you think like this. Cuba here we come. This President of yours has done nothing except turn people against each other and you are a proof of this. Senator Schumer said it today.. Taxing the rich is the beginning you have to start somewhere and next will be the middle class. God bless you Rick, oops should not have said that since that is one of the changes that Obama is attempting to make in our country. The man has been a waste and was a waste prior to becoming president. Never held a job, just a rabble rouser and still is a rabble rouser. A shame that people like you believe in a nothing like him. How's that hope and change treating you Rick???? Poor economy, High gas prices, More entitlements for people who won't work, A health plan that will make the government our health police. And you believe that your wife and daughter will be taken care of by Obama sure he will take care of them just like he is taking care of making our country a third world country. TRILLIONS in debt and he has added more debt than all the other presidents combined. Oh the debt is Bush's fault I almost forgot. And we thought that Carter was the worst president ever, well Obama has taken that crown.
Don Charles April 11, 2012 at 01:05 PM
I would like to apologize to the people on the Patch subject on potholes. I could not let someone like Rick spout his spin on the worst president ever. The Democrats are killing the state of CT as they have done for years ion their control of Htfd. They are now attempting to kill the USA with their class warfare etc. and people like Rick come to the defense of sleazes. Sorry everyone out there excepting for Rick who shows his colors proudly, and uses the same old rhetoric, Limbaugh, Beck, Fox news etc. BTW Rick I am a registered Democrat. NO HOPE NO CHANGE.. VOTE OBAMA IN 2012!!!
Rick April 13, 2012 at 09:42 PM
Ok Mr. Charles you’re a Mitt man well then you know he supports Paul Ryan’s Budget. Have you read it? I have. His plan has low-income and middle-class Americans shouldering the burden of deficit reduction while delivering massive tax breaks to the rich. It slashes education including Pell Grants, infrastructure, and research all of which are key drivers of economic growth. It ends decent insurance for seniors. Seniors will receive a voucher to pay for private insurance. Healthcare costs increase twice the rate of inflation the effect of this over the long term is a massive shift of cost to seniors as their healthcare vouchers give them less and less coverage over time. Ryan’s plan also slashes Medicaid and repeals the Affordable Care Act leaving thousands of Americans uninsured. He also wants to take a portion of social security and funnel it to Wall Street to gamble with rather than having the current program stand as it is as an insurance program rather than an investment. It's all in the CBO report. Millionaire Mitt paid a 13.9% tax rate and Middle Class me paid a 26% tax rate. Requiring people to pay their fair share is not turning people against each other. Obama is the worst President? You have heard of Nixon haven’t you? You should watch who you call a fool because the only fool here is you and on top of it you’re making an ass out of yourself talking about things you obviously know nothing about. I don’t care how you are registered YOU are no Democrat.
Don Charles April 13, 2012 at 11:28 PM
Okay Rick you win. You and your ilk know it all. God Bless America cause we need it with you and fools like Obama in power.
Don Charles April 13, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Wow you read the Ryan budget. Oh my you should have also read the Healthcare bill. Oops that's right Nancy said you would know what was in it when it passed. There was no need to read it. By the way all you said about the Ryan budget was nonsense you didn't read it don't come off a like know it all since you only know what the party says. Guess you have no comment on the 500,000 dollars Obama cut out of Medicare. Or all the money he has been giving to his friends and contributors in the guise of stimulus. Rick like all liberals it's a waste of time in speaking with you. Have fun with your socialistic freebee future. Remember to take to the streets like OWS and all the unions in Greece. Class warfare that's the way to go and you have fallen head over heels in that sickness.
Karen April 16, 2012 at 07:49 PM
Hi New Road is in need of pothole repair. And Yeah for you Rick I don't have a Swiss Bank account either.
Kathleen Ramunni (Editor) April 16, 2012 at 08:31 PM
Most of the potholes at the end of Brooksvale Avenue have been patched. Thanks PW!
John Roach June 01, 2012 at 02:21 PM
Knoll Drive hasn't been paved for fifty years and storm drains are plugged solid with sand and debris and caved in as well. My neighbors driveway washes out because of it during heavy rainfalls. The Town Engineer checked it out but can't do anything about it because of the useless mayor who doesn't know how to make a maintainance budget. He even hires people on his staff who can't even return a phone call. Try getting a list of roads scheduled to be repaired this fiscal year and see how far you get. There is no excuse for the inept performance by elected town officials who lack the ability to to perform their high paying jobs. Its tome to clean house!
Dan Garrett June 01, 2012 at 06:18 PM
Rick can I please tell you something? yes you are wasting your time on Don the"registered Democrat" Thank you Rick, for assisting, in getting President Obama elected. This country would have difficulty surviving a mitt presidency.
Don Charles June 01, 2012 at 09:21 PM
Dan is the school system in town supposed to be the top priority. It seems that you would like all the money in town to go to them. You must be on one of the Parent teachers boards. Maybe we should start cutting teachers who don't teach properly and channell that money to where it will help ALL townspeople and not just the cry babies of the BOE.
Don Charles June 01, 2012 at 09:30 PM
Difficulty!!! what do you consider good about your community organizer who never held a job and just keeps lying about jobs, Unemployment etc. What a shame that you people who think he is the greatest can't see over the spin of Obama and his people. Four more years and we will all be in the poor house. Oh not to worry we can join the 41 Miilion on food stamps and live off the true workers of the USA.
Dan Garrett June 01, 2012 at 10:04 PM
Mitt's grandfather had five wives at the same time. He is a Republican family values kind of guy. I will vote for President Obama a true American. Oh yeah mitt was in France during Vietnam he is a draft dodger, like your friends Ted Nugent, the DICK cheney, lieberman, rumsfeld, and most Republican politicians.
Don Charles June 02, 2012 at 02:13 PM
Your last comment says it all Dan. You are a total nothing when it comes to the USA, I assume you believe in America becoming a third world country. You were lucky while you were on the new Haven Green with ONH that the weather was so good for your protests. What will be your next protest? Protesting against Easter Sunday and Christmas!! MSNBC IS ON COMCAST 63, Keep tuning in for all the news that you love. NOBAMA said he would fundamentally change America and that is what you are also interested in doing. He sure has been good for America, No jobs, Poor economy, badmouthing christians, changing voter laws, Class warfare, pitting US citizens against each other, his years are a disgrace and a disaster for the USA and yet people like you believe he is wonderful. Yeh we know it's all Bush's fault!!! Bye Dan I don't comment with airheads who only believe that their socialistic ways are the only ways. Keep badmouthing Romney and anyone else that tells the truth. You can have NOBAMA, Holder, Malloy and all the rest of the phonies.
Dan Garrett June 02, 2012 at 03:50 PM
Don, your last comment says it all. Romney telling the truth. He has flipped and flopped more than Flipper. Have a nice day my brainwashed Fox news friend.
Marty June 02, 2012 at 05:17 PM
You want to talk about the worst president (though why you are even talking about it on a story about potholes is beyond me ) then you HAVE to be talking about George W. Bush, who single-handedly RUINED this country after 9/11 by convincing people that Hussain was involved in order to justify invading Iraq so he could get the man who threatened his daddy. THOUSANDS of young Americans died just so Bush could get his revenge. And the real war in Afghanistan was put on the back burner while Bush played tough guy. It took Obama to get the real villian -- Bin Laden. They should use the new George W. Bush White House portrait as a target. Between Romney and Obama -- neither are much of a bargain. We need another Harry S Truman.
Dan Garrett June 02, 2012 at 07:26 PM
Marty, I agree with 90% of your comment, except our President is cleaning up after a huge mess left by the dry drunk. He is doing a very good job considering.
Robert Caroti June 02, 2012 at 08:55 PM
Getting back on point here ... Wintergreen Ave is quite the obstacle course with potholes. Ok. Back to the haters
ROBERT VOSS March 05, 2013 at 04:11 PM
YOU MUST HAVE A POSITION WITH THE TOWN AND HAD YOUR STREET PAVED
Mike Torello March 03, 2014 at 07:46 AM
West Todd st is like Beirut. I call Public Works every week and they patch a couple of the smaller ones, but miss at least half every time they come out. Todd St is just as bad.
