Hamden Art League Event

Hamden Art League features a demonstration by pastel artist Ellie Bender in the Social Hall of the Miller Memorial Library Senior Center, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden, Connecticut. Bender will demonstrate how she works from a model to create a realistic pastel portrait of her subject.

A native of Meriden, Ellie was professionally trained at the Art School of Fashion in Hartford, Connecticut and studied painting at Hartford Art School. She was employed as a fashion illustrator and commercial artist by many Connecticut department stores and ad agencies.

Changes in the job market led her back to fine art, particularly portraiture. People are the essential element in her work, with commissioned portraits being her specialty. Her "Contemporary Realism" style involves applying pastel in a layered technique, creating intense color and strong contrasts while reflecting her love of fabrics and texture.

Ellie Bender has won numerous national and regional awards, taught many classes and workshops and is a member of several art organizations. She has exhibited her work in galleries in Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts.

The meeting will take place in the Social Room of the Miller Memorial Library Senior Center, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden. Socializing and refreshments begin at 7:15 p.m., followed by a brief business meeting at 7:20 and the artist's presentation at 7:30-8:30. The public is welcome.
