A Working Mom’s Blog...School's Over

Mom's perspective on the mixed emotions of the school year ending

So, school was done for my daughters last week –both are in
elementary school. Who would think it could mean so many mixed emotions for a mom like me!

They were totally psyched…for me…a bit of a roller coaster of emotions running through my head: happy they get a break and are eager for bike days and play dates…for me, it’s a different feeling to leave for work in the morning knowing they’re not also “working” and busy at school all day.

For our family, our circumstances at the moment mean they get to enjoy their summer days with Dad right now – lucky girls! For this mom, it means I feel like I have anvils in my shoes in the morning trying to motivate and be the only one to get out the door before 8. It feels like having a mini-me in my head whispering “yeah for the girls, they look so smiley, have fun today,” vs “do I HAVE to leave this fun fest to be responsible and get to work?”

Of course I’ve requested vacation time this summer, so I know I’ll enjoy their company, it’s just this initial week that’s the hardest and exudes so many ironies.

Irony #1? On school days, beg daughter to wake up and get
dressed for school (the younger one is up early no matter what!)…Now that school’s over, my daughter is up and energized by about 7 or 7:30! AND, she’s dressed and running across the street to wish her friends (neighbors) a good day at school since they’re finishing this week.
