Hamden Girl Dies After Accident with Tree

The Hamden Middle School student was struck by a falling tree trunk Friday afternoon and passed away Monday.

A Hamden girl has died after a freak accident Friday at her Gilbert Avenue home.

Gabriela Hudak, 12, was injured while playing on a tree trunk that had fallen during a recent storm in her back yard, according to officials. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she passed away on Monday.

The following statement was posted on the Hamden Public Schools website:

"HPS is deeply saddened to report the passing of one of our students. Gabriela Hudak passed away this morning after sustaining a serious injury last Friday.

Gabby, as she was so fondly called, attended Dunbar Hill Schoolfrom kindergarten through grade six and was currently a student atHamden Middle School. She will be remembered as the bright and shining star that she was – an avid reader with an inquiring mind, and a good friend to all.

Gabby was also a caring member of her community, organizing a Hurricane Relief Fund for Haiti. As one of her teachers said, “Gabby was one of those few kids who got along with everyone – she was smart, kind, talented and a true pleasure to be around. She loved school and everyone in school loved her.”

A “Service to Celebrate Gabby’s Life” will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Dunbar United Church of Christ, 767 Benham St.

Counselors will be available at Hamden Middle School on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 2 – 4 p.m. for anyone in the Hamden community wanting support in dealing with this tragedy.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with the Hudak family during this difficult time."
