VISION FOR VACANCIES: The Former Stone Academy

What would you like to see go in the building at 1315 Dixwell Ave.?

It was a year ago this month that Stone Academy pickup up and moved its school from Hamden to West Haven.

Since then the 25,000 square foot space has been empty and signs read that it is for lease.

The building is being marketed for another school, medical offices and retail space. It's located within a stone's throw of Stop and Shop and across the street from McDonalds.

What would you like to see go in the space?

The question is why did Stone Academy pick up and move out of Hamden, like so many other businesses have done? That question has to be answered before anyone can suggest what they would like to see go in that empty 25,000 square foot space?

Maybe taxes? The place they moved into in West Haven isn't much bigger than where they were. They didn't own the building in Hamden but they paid tax on the stuff they owned. Businesses have to be crazy to invest here because the taxes are so high and they're not going to go down any time soon. Dixwell Avenue has so much on it already a business would have to be pretty unique to stand out there. And the closer you get to New Haven, the worse it is for the business. This is probably going to stay vacant for a long time.

Harmony Kids is going in that space. They have already put a lot of money into improvements. I believe it is a day care center.
