HAMDEN VISION FOR VACANCIES: Whitney Sandwich and Benjamin Moore

Both stores in the same building at 2308 Whitney Ave. are now closed. What would you like to see go in there?

An empty building now stands at 2308 Whitney Ave., the former home of Whitney Sandwich and Benjamin Moore Paint.

The building is next to the former Centerville Lumber, which also closed and is still vacant and for sale Both properties, a total of 5.44 acres, are being marketed together and are for sale for $3.2 million.

Back in December, what you would like to see go in where Centerville Lumber operated. Now we want to know -- what should go in the Whitney Sandwich and Benjamin Moore building?

Duchess restaurant. There's not much good fast food anymore since it closed.

Most likely both the lumber building and this building are going to be demolished to make way for some larger project. I can't imagine what that could be aside from perhaps a movie theater, which would be a welcome addition to Hamden and would probably do well given its proximity to the parkway. I would hate to see a big box store go in there -- I'd much rather see small locally-owned businesses. Or something like Whole Foods or Trader Joes, as so many people have mentioned in the past. But with the way the economy still is, it's likely this piece is going to sit vacant for some time to come.

I would like to see a pop up art gallery. I am dismayed at the lack of this kind of outlet for us local artists. It would at least allow something to happen in the building while the powers that be decide what to do more permanently.

Now here's one very interesting idea for the site -- if you're interested, you should attend this brainstorming session. http://myemail.constantcontact.com/Brainstorming-Session-at-urbanminers.html?soid=1103031757252&aid=6nBN3I5JogU

Brainstorming session can be very productive, when a neutral entity promotes and conducts the brainstorming session, but when the entity promoting the brainstorming session also promotes wine and cheese consumption at the brainstorming session, how objective would the participants be?

I would love to open a dog daycare and internet coffee shop. Was hoping to see a developer in there that wanted to use the old properties so I could have a shot. I heard they would demolish all the properties including the old hardware store and funeral home. Is this true?

Id love a gourmet lunch place, pit bull rescue center, and small discrete marijuana dispensary

Again, I want to see a Youth & Family Center located in some of these vacant spots. Our youth really have no place to call home. The Youth Services Bureau is in a temporary location at the Board of Education building until their building is built. But, that will be in another three years. Our youth need somewhere right now.
