Ammonia Leak Sends Emergency Crews to Ice Rink

The parking lot of the Louis Astorino Ice Rink was filled with emergency vehicles Thursday night after an alarm sounded in the building indicating an ammonia leak.

A leak in a compressor used to freeze the ice at the Louis Astorino Ice Rink malfunctioned Tuesday evening, setting off an alarm that brought emergency crews to the site at about 7 p.m.

Rink workers said the compressor leaked the ammonia, which set off the alarm. The rink was closed at the time so there was no one in the building, officials said.

There were no reported injuries, but crews from both Hamden and New Haven were at the rink into the night ventilating the building.
