Hamden to Pause for Moment of Silence

Mayor Scott D. Jackson and Legislaitve Council President Judi Kozak are asking town employees, town residents and businesses to observe a "moment of silence" at 9:30 a.m. Friday, as declared by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, to honor the 26 victims of the heinous tragedy that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown a week earlier.

Places of worship will be ringing their bells 26 times in remembrance of the victims.

The day has been proclaimed a statewide "Day of Mourning" by the governor in tribute to the memory of the 20 first-graders and six educators killed at the school.

The town will hold two services today in remembrance of the tragedy that occurred in Newtown one week ago.

Jackson, Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz and Reverend Carolyn Young invite members of the public to observe the moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. at Whitneyville United Church of Christ, located at 1253 Whitney Ave. The bells at the Church will ring 26 times for each of the victims.

In addition, at noon, the town, with the assistance of Graziella Zinn, Chairwoman of the Human Rights and Relations Commission, will be holding a short serviceentitled “Gathering of Remembrance and Bell Ringing” at Thornton Wilder Hall at the Miller Memorial Library Complex.

The public is invited to attend this service and is encouraged to stay and talk with each other about last Friday's tragic events following the service.
