BRANFORD – These newly weds are set for life, literally.

The Branford couple, Brian and Emily Cahill, is the lucky winner of a Connecticut State Lottery’s “Set For Life” scratch off ticket. They will now receive $100,000 (about $70,000 after taxes) a year for the rest of their life.

Where did Brian buy the ticket and how do they plan on spending the money? Branford Patch covers it all in this article.

NORTH HAVEN – Yale New Haven Hospital’s plan to build a medical center on Devine Street has pitted two municipalities against each other.

North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda says the center will be a welcome resource to residents. But Meriden Mayor Michael Rohde maintains that Yale’s center will lead to adverse economic impacts on its MidState Hospital.

Ultimately, the decision to let Yale proceed rests with the CT Office of Health Care Access (OHCA), which is expected to render a decision by Oct. 3.

Meanwhile, OHCA is accepting testimony from residents. And a few weigh in on the  matter in the comments on this North Haven Patch article.

STRATFORD – Efforts to usher in the rebirth of the town’s Festival Theatre are gaining momentum.

Phase two of a six-part project — to create an advisory task force — is getting underway. And a few members who have signed on are powerful players in the arts and political scene, including Fairfield University Theatre Head Dr. Marti LoMonaco and U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3.

What’s the vision? And who’s paying for this? Stratford Patch has the answers.

EAST HAVEN – Four fires in one month. The latest one hit a vacant Garry Drive residence Tuesday morning.

The cause of that fire is under investigation, according to Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Licata.

As for the uptick in the number of fires in July, the assistant chief says, "We can never determine exactly why fires are becoming more prevalent. They do run in spurts like that."

East Haven Patch has more details on the Garry Drive house fire as well as the other three this month.

CHESHIRE – It may be just a loaner, but it is one futuristic looking crime-fighting machine.

Cheshire police unveiled this week the latest vehicle in their fleet: a three-wheeled Spyder Can-Am motorcycle.

The department is one of only a handful across the country using the motorcycles, which are made by Bombardier Recreational Products Inc., of Quebec, Canada. The vehicle comes to the department by way of Waterbury-based business, Land N' Sea Marine, which is loaning it to Cheshire police for one year.

Officers have high hopes for how the vehicle will help in its community policing efforts. Check out the Cheshire Patch story to find out how.
