"Powerful Winter Storm" Headed Our Way

Snow begins tonight and lasts through tomorrow.

 

A winter weather advisory is in affect for New Haven County as snow and ice is expected to begin falling tonight and last throughout the night and into tomorrow.

Two to four inches of snow are expected to accumulate, along with a half an inch of ice, according to the advisory issued by the National Weather Service. Winds will gust between 20 to 30 mph and could reach as high as 50 mph, according to the advisory.

Temperatures will remain in the 30s and visibility will be limited to a quarter mile or less.

"SNOW AND ICE ACCUMULATIONS WILL MAKE FOR DANGEROUS TRAVEL TONIGHT. IN ADDITION...STRONG WINDS COULD DOWN SNOW AND ICE COVERED TREE LIMBS...POWER LINES AND HOLIDAY DECORATIONS... AND CAUSE MINOR PROPERTY DAMAGE. POWER OUTAGES ARE POSSIBLE. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING."

A Hazardous Weather Outlook is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday morning. 

The forecast:

  • Wednesday afternoon: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 34. Northeast wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night: Snow before 8pm, then rain. The rain and snow could be heavy at times. Patchy fog. Low around 34. Windy, with a northeast wind 22 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Thursday: Rain, mainly before 3pm. Patchy fog before 3pm. High near 44. North wind 7 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
  • Thursday Night: A slight chance of rain and snow before 9pm, then a slight chance of snow between 9pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. Northwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
