Pratt & Whitney Laying Off 200 Employees in Connecticut

The company said in a statement it is cutting a total of 350 workers across the board as a way to keep costs competitive.

Aerospace company Pratt & Whitney is laying off roughly 200 salaried employees at its Middletown and East Hartford locations, a company official confirmed Tuesday.

In an email response to Patch, spokesman Robin Salisbury said Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies, is shedding approximately 350 positions company-wide as a way to keep its cost structure competitive.

“Our long-term outlook is very bright; however, to secure this bright future we must address some near-term challenges,” Salisbury said.

The company did not state a specific breakdown of how many employees would be losing their jobs at either of the Middletown or East Hartford locations.

The cuts went into effect immediately.

Salisbury said the move is also part of a continual assessment of staffing levels to “ensure they are in line with current business and economic conditions.”

According to The Hartford Courant
, the company employs roughly 10,000 workers in Connecticut. This latest round of workforce reduction comes on the heels of an additional 100 hourly employees who were let go in December through buyouts and layoffs, the newspaper reported.

This is also the second time in less than a year that salaried employees were laid off. Pratt & Whitney cut 300 jobs last May as part of a cost-saving effort, with 200 of those layoffs coming from its two Connecticut locations.
