Skiff Street Closure Ends Friday

The road has been closed by Stop and Shop since Aug. 8 to allow for construction of an underground tunnel to take Farmington Canal Greenway users under the busy road rather than over it.

Skiff Street will be open again to traffic beginning Friday afternoon, according to Mayor Scott Jackson.

A portion of the road closed on Aug. 8 to allow for construction work by Stop and Shop where the Farmington Canal Greenway crosses the road.

In order to take that foot traffic off of Skiff Street, a 105' tunnel underpass is under construction that will allow Canal users to cross under then busy road rather than on it.

The road closure was expected to last until Aug. 21 but finished up three days early, Jackson said, so the road will be open in time for the weekend.

Skiff Street businesses have remained open and accessible during the closure, with traffic redirected to access the road from either side of the work on Dixwell and Whitney avenues.

Although the project is anticipated to take another six weeks, the road excavation work that blocked the major east-west artery has now been completed, Jackson said.

The Mayor praised the Guerrera Construction Company for making an “impressive effort to keep the project on schedule and re-opening Skiff Street to through traffic three days early.”

He noted that both AT&T and the South Central Regional Water Authority had been instrumental in facilitating the construction.

He also thanked the business owners, employees and members of the greater Hamden community for the patience all have shown during the intense construction activity.

“I greatly appreciate the cooperation and patience everyone has exhibited, despite the inconvenience," he said, "as we have worked to make using the Farmington Canal Greenway an even safer experience. ”

Any questions or concerns during the project should be addressed to Dan Kops, Assistant Town Planner, in the Town of Hamden Planning and Zoning Department at 203-287-7070.
