NHR: State Forgives Medicaid Lien Stalling House Purchase

The HEDC is buying Virginia Miner's house as part of the Newhall environmental remediation project.

Some old red tape nearly cost a widow the proceeds on the sale of her house as part of the Newhall Remediation program, which uses government funds following the cleanup work.

The New Haven Register reported that several state legislators representing Hamden and Hamden Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) head Dale Kroop succeeded in convincing the state Department of Social Services to forgive a long-forgotten Medicaid lien dating from 1985 to clear the way for the land purchase of the house.

Otherwise, Virginia Miner might not have received any money for the house she and her late husband owned since 1964. The house is one of 37 houses in the Newhall neighborhood the HEDC wants to purchase and demolish rather than renovate as part of the environmental remediation project.
