Town is in "Full Scale Preparation" for Hurricane Sandy

All town departments are involved in preparations for the upcoming storm and will be on call around the clock responding in its aftermath.

Mayor Scott D. Jackson reports that the Hamden Emergency Management Team is in full-scale preparation for the upcoming storm, with many Town Departments and volunteers doing prep and preventative work for the past week.

An action plan has been developed with Town Departments, including the Fire Department, Police Department, Public Works & Parks Department, Finance Department, Community Services, Elderly Services and the Mayor’s Office.

Town staff have prepared machinery and equipment, did preventative maintenance on storm drains and other clearing efforts in flood prone areas, developed plans for an Emergency Shelter, coordinated with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and have had town staff on official stand-by since Friday.

In addition, the Public Works and Parks departments will have crews out Sunday to complete additional preventative work to help as many areas as possible. In addition, all Town generators have been tested and fueled in preparation for potential power outages.

Once the storm hits, crews are planned for 24-hour a day response to do everything needed to get the town safe in as quick and efficient a manner as possible.

An Emergency Shelter will be activated Sunday at the Hamden High School under the Direction of Fire Chief Baradesca and the town's CERT Team. Additional details regarding the shelter will be released about this effort.

Mayor Jackson spent Saturday in the Mayor’s Office personally taking calls from concerned citizen, working to get information on the storm and storm preparation to Hamden citizens through the media and the town website and assessing areas of concern in the Town.

The Town has been working with local and state officials throughout the day and during the past week to best prepare for the event and to develop communication plans for getting the up-to-date information out to residents in the fastest way possible.

The news media, the Town’s website at www.hamden.com, the reverse 911 phone system, social media (Facebook at “Town of Hamden, CT” and Twitter at “@townofhamden” are all being used to push the best information out to as many people as possible.
