Board of Education: Democrat John DeRosa

Hamden Patch offered the candidates the opportunity to state their case for the voters. Here's what Democratic Board of Education candidate John DeRosa has to say.

My name is John DeRosa and my wife and I have lived in Hamden for over 30 years.  We have two adult daughters who have gone through the Hamden Public School System.  One is an elementary school teacher and the other is pursuing her degree in nursing.

I have proudly served as the Legislative Council’s 8th District Representative for six years, chairing the Town Building Committee, School Building Committee and the Education Committee.  I am also the Vice Chair of the Public Works and Public Safety Committee.  Prior to being elected to my seat on the Legislative Council, I was a resident-elector to the Town and School Building Committees.  During my tenure on the School Building Committee, a new middle school was built, Spring Glen Elementary School was replaced and major renovations were made to Bear Path, Shepard Glen and Ridge Hill schools.  On the town side, Memorial Town Hall was renovated and new Police Headquarters were built.

I am a member of the Dunbar Hill Civic Association, the Italian-American Historical Society, and a commissioner and coach for the Hamden Regional Youth Basketball League.  Also, I am a U.S. Army Veteran who served in Vietnam.  In addition to my civic involvements, my family and I are communicants of the Church of the Ascension.

Our children are our greatest assets and we have a responsibility to see to it that they receive the best education possible.  With your help, we will do our best to ensure that present and future generations reap the same educational benefits that past generations have enjoyed.  Along with the highest academic achievements possible, my focus as a member of the Board of Education will be on the security and protection of all students enrolled in the Hamden Public School System.

I have been acknowledged as a hard worker for the citizens of Hamden in the past and have always spoken up when others shrink from a challenge.  With your support on November 5th, I will continue to be that voice.

John J. DeRosa
