Chapel Haven holds college readiness, nutrition workshops

Chapel Haven, an award-winning school for young adults on the

autism spectrum and with other developmental disabilities, is offering

two classes this month to kick off a series of free educational

community workshops.

The first is the popular college readiness workshop that teaches

families what they need to know to navigate the sometimes tricky

business of college. Experts from Chapel Haven will share strategies for

success and insight into why college can be a struggle - but also a

great success - for this with Asperger’s Syndrome, other autism spectrum

disorders and developmental disabilities. Those who attend will also

learn about the supports available at colleges for those with special

needs.

The workshop is October 16 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The second workshop this month will be held October 29 from 7 to 9 p.m.

and the topic will be healthy eating. The audience will get a sample of

an innovative nutrition course taught at Chapel Haven through the

expertise of educators from the Cornell-Scott Hill Health Center. The

workshop, like the class, will be in game show-style format. The

interactive workshop is for parents and young adults and focuses on

teaching our special needs adults about healthy portion sizes, limit

sugar and fat, and the effect of emotions on eating habits, weight gain

and loss. The “The Weigh to Live” proved so successful that after the

first nine-week course last semester, the class’ 16 students lost more

than 60 lbs. in total.

The students learned tips such as eating peanut butter sandwiches topped

with bananas instead of jelly and drinking water instead of soda or

juice. Parents may opt to have their young adults join in the workshop

or spend time in our fitness center with Chapel Haven’s wonderful

trainer, Kim!
