Welcome back to The Jazz Scene!
Last week's Jazz Series featuring the amazing Jimmy Greene was a huge success. The Outer Space's tables were jam packed in its darkly lit club. At first I thought the energy level was way too low during the show, but then it hit me: All the patrons were quietly listening to the music, really abosrbing it. Definitely a sight to see.
Jimmy was just the sweetest guy. He showed up, saxophone in hand with a smile on his face. I had never met him before but heard excellent things about his character. As he entered we greeted and I introduced him to the band that would be accompanying him for the night....my band actually, minus myself. The mood was relaxed as the guys figured out the songs they would play that evening.
Only in Jazz can 4 guys who have never played together can meet for the first time, name a couple of standards and play their butts off.
After the show I was able to explain more of the situation with the Jazz Series. Jimmy with a smile gave his blessings and said that what's happening here helps the music so much. Nothing better than that.
I'm honored to have worked with Mr. Greene and hope to see him at the club sometime soon.
On another note, The Jazz Series presents this week August 19th at 6pm the Vance Provey Group.
Vance is a diciple of the late great Bill Dixon who worked with Cecil Taylor's band in the mid 60's and went on to record countless records featuring new and adventurous music. Vance's band will continue in that spirit at the Outer Space.
Cost is free so please come out and see what's happening.
