Bishop Arlester Coward, 94

He was the founder of St. James Unity Holiness Church in New Haven.

Bishop Arlester Coward, 94, of Hamden, departed this life October 10, 2012. He was the husband of Lillie Coward.

Born in Winterville, NC, October 25, 1917, he was the son of the late James and Lillie Victoria Barrett Coward. Bishop Coward was Pastor and Founder of St. James Unity Holiness Church in New Haven.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Victoria Levine (Winston); a son, Paul Boyd; a stepson Joe Nelson; six grandchildren; a great grandchild; his church family and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Elder Mildred Coward; grandson, Tyler Coward; brothers, James and Arthur Coward and Mack Fleming; sisters, Christina McCaffity, MaeBell Boyd, Olivia Artis and Mildred, Nellie and Clindell Coward; stepson, Lee Nelson; and stepdaughter, Minister Mary Nelson.

A celebration of Bishop Coward's life and legacy will be held Monday, October 22, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Unity Holiness Church, 79 Lawrence St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 8-10 a.m. and Sunday from 2-6 p.m. Service of Reflection will begin at 6 p.m.
