Hamden Obituaries: Mildred C. Gilbert, 89

While camping at Hammonasset, when her children were young, she enjoyed early morning walks on the beach.




Mildred C. Gilbert, 89, formerly of Hamden, wife of the late Norman Gilbert passed away peacefully at Yale New Haven Hospital (St. Raphael’s Campus) on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013.

She was the beloved mother of Norman (Sharon) Gilbert, Linda Esposito and her fiancé Joseph Piazza, Robert (Marybeth) Gilbert and Wayne (Mary) Gilbert, and the loving grandmother of Heather, Eric, Lee Ann, Alyssa, Jason and Spencer.

Mildred worked at the Whitney Center in Hamden for many years until her retirement. While camping at Hammonasset, when her children were young, she enjoyed early morning walks on the beach. Swimming was also a favorite activity. For many years, Millie, looked forward to her weekly get-togethers with “the girls” for a swim class and lunch.

She was a dog lover and was especially fond of her adopted Pomeranian, Ginger. In recent years she has met and enjoyed the company of many new friends and spending time knitting and doing arts & crafts at the Gables in Guilford.

Friends may greet the family on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. A private graveside service will be held Saturday morning at 10: 30 a.m. in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, Donations in Mildred’s name can be made to the American Heart Association at donate.heart or to the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org.
