Hamden Obituaries: Salvatore Scognamillo, 95

He was a self employed painter for more than 30 years and a custodian in the Hamden School System prior to retirement.



Salvatore Scognamillo, 95, formerly of Thompson St., Hamden, died Jan. 19, 2014 at Highland Health Care Center after a long illness. He was the husband of Angelina Russo Scognamillo.

Sal was born in New Haven on July 19, 1918, son of the late Giovanni and Maria Kline Scognamillo, and had resided in Hamden all of his life. He was a self employed painter for more than 30 years and a custodian in the Hamden School System prior to retirement.

An Army Veteran of WWII, he was an active member of the American Legion, Highwood Post #150.

Besides his wife, he is survived by children, Jo-Ann Konareski of Hamden and Salvatore J. Scognamillo of Cheshire, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his siblings, Josephine DelVecchio, Marion Erff, Viola DePaolo, Helen Maturo, Frank, Fred and John Scognamillo.

His funeral will leave Friday at 9 a.m. from the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden for a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.
