Cops: Speeding Leads to Car in Lake

A Hartford man was cited for traveling unreasonably fast Monday night after he and his car ended up in Lake Whitney.

A Hartford man took an extreme wrong turn Monday night and found himself -- and his car -- submerged in Lake Whitney, according to Hamden Police.

At about 8 p.m. Monday night, police got a report of a motor vehicle accident on Waite Street, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

When officers arrived, they found Ashish Wadhwa, 26, of 80 Oxford St., Hartford, on the side of the road and his 2008 Mercedes Benz in the lake.

According to Smith, Wadhwa was driving west on Waite Street "when he veered off of the roadway into Lake Whitney," Smith said. "Wadhwa was able to exit his vehicle before it became fully submerged under water."

Officer Stephen DeGrand, who conducted the investigation, determined that Wadhwa was speeding when the accident occured, Smith said. He suffered a leg injury in the accident, he said.

Wadhwa was issued an infraction for Traveling Unreasonably Fast, Smith said.

The Regional Water Authority and the Department of Environmental Protection assisted in the investigation, Smith said, and the car is being removed from the lake.
