A 14-year-old girl riding her bicycle Sunday afternoon was attacked and assaulted by eight teen, sending her to the hospital, according to police.
At about 4:30 p.m. police got a report of a street robbery in the area of Goodrich and Saint Mary streets, Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith said.
Officers found the injured 14-year-old, Smith said, who told police that she was riding her bike when the eight teens -- five boys and three girls, described as being 16 to 18 years old -- approached her, knocked her off the bike and began kicking her and punching her in the head.
The teens took the bike and took off southbound toward New Haven, Smith said.
"The 14 year-old victim suffered injuries to her head, knee and hand. Hamden Fire Rescue responded and rendered medical assistance," Smith said. "She was transported by American Medical Response to Yale-New Haven Hospital for further treatment and evaluation."
The Hamden Police Department Detective Division is conducting the investigation, Smith said, and anyone with any information is asked to call 203-230-4000.
