A Dixwell Avenue man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly strangled his girlfriend "for a long period of time," according to police.
At about 6:15 p.m., Hamden Police got a report of an assult at 1166 Dixwell Ave., Apt. 3, police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith said.
There, a 50-year-old woman told Officer Robert O’Neill that she was in her boyfriend's car when the two started arguing, Smith said. The argument soon turned physical, the woman told police, and her boyfriend, identified as Anthony Highsmith, 49, of 1160 Dixwell Ave., Apt. 10, assaulted her.
She told police she then fell to the ground while Highsmith strangled her “for a long period of time,” Smith said. She suffered head and neck injuries, as well as a bloody nose, Smith said, and was treated by Hamden Fire Rescue at the scene.
Highsmith was charged with third-degree assault, breach of peace and third-degree strangulation. He was held in lieu of $10,000 bond and was arraigned Friday in Meriden Superior Court.
