Elderly Cyclist Hurt in Accident with Car

A 71-year-old New Haven man was injured Monday when he rode his bicycle into traffic on Dixwell Avenue, according to police.

 

An elderly New Haven man was injured Monday when he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Dixwell Avenue.

Hamden Police responded to Dixwell Avenue and Dudley Street at about 2:15 p.m. on the report of a motor vehicle accident involving a bicycle, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

"Upon arrival, officers found David Wheeler, 71, of New Haven, lying in the roadway with multiple injuries," Smith said. "Hamden Fire Rescue responded and provided medical assistance. Wheeler was transported to the Hospital of Saint Raphael. His injuries were reported as non-life threatening." 

Wheeler was riding his bicycle northbound on Dixwell Avenue in the right lane when he enter the left northbound lane and collided with a northbound vehicle, Smith said.

Officer Gregg Curran of the Hamden Police Department Traffic Division is conducting the investigation, Smith said.
