Elderly Woman Victim of "Distraction Burglary"

Police are warning residents not to fall for scams where one person distracts you while a second robs you.

An elderly Colony Street resident was the victim of a "distraction burglary" Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Hamden Police got the report of the burglary at a Colony Street home at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

The resident, a 93-year-old woman, was raking leavs in her yard when she was approached by a man described as Hispanic, about 20 years old and with a slim build, Smith said.

"He offered to rake the leaves for $49.99," Smith said. "He further offered to clean the exterior of her house.

"The elderly resident allowed the individual to enter her residence to “boil water.” The individual then asked the resident to show him the exterior of her home," Smith said.

A second man, also described as Hispanic, 40 to 50 years of age with a short, slim build and a mustache, "then entered her home and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry," Smith said. "The elderly resident also lost several items of sentimental value."

The two then took off in a white, newer model Dodge van or pickup truck, Smith said. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective William Onofrio at 203-230-4040.

"Hamden Police would like to warn residents about these scams," Smith said. "If faced with similar circumstances, residents should not allow anyone into their home. Doors should be locked when working outside. Furthermore, residents are encouraged to contact the police immediately, if they feel that suspicious activity is occurring."
