Five Arrested after "Massive" Halloween Party

Five Quinnipiac University students are facing breach of peace charges after the party attended by about 500 students, according to police.

A Halloween party attended by hundred of Quinnipiac University students at a Whitney Avenue residence ended Thursday night when police arrived and one student fell in a well in the back yard, according to police.

Hamden Police got a report of "a large crowd causing  excessive noise, parking complaints and traffic safety concerns" at 3235 Whitney Ave. at about 11 p.m. Thursday, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith..

"Upon arrival, officers observed nearly 150 people congregating in the front and rear yard. Many of the individuals were intoxicated and the music was excessively loud," Smith said in a release Friday. "Further inspection revealed that approximately 350 additional guests were found inside of the residence."

The 350 others were in the four-bedroom home that is about 1,858 square feet, according to Vision Appraisal. The home is located on Whitney Avenue between Sherman Avenue and Renshaw Road in a strip of homes of which many house Quinnipiac students and have been a cause of contention between the students and neighbors.

"Hamden Police immediately began dispersing the large crowd. Quinnipiac University was contacted to transport a large number of the individuals back to the university," Smith said.

"As the crowd began to leave, officers were alerted that a 21-year-old Hamden resident had fallen into a 15 foot abandoned well which was located in the backyard," he said. "The Hamden Fire Department was summoned and successfully extricated the individual from the well. He refused medical treatment."

Police arrested the five tenants of the house, which is owned by Thirty-Two Thirty-Five Whitney Avenue Associates, LLC. They are: 

  • Antonio Blanco, 21, of 12 Friend Court, Congers, New York
  • Scott Schubet, 21, of 3235 Whitney Avenue, Hamden
  • Zachary Palmer, 21, of 3235 Whitney Avenue, Hamden
  • Ryan Spagnuolo, 21, of 3235 Whitney Avenue, Hamden
  • Brian Macduff, 21, of 3235 Whitney Avenue, Hamden 

Each was charged with breach of peace and all were released on a written promise to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Nov. 6.
