Hamden Man Charged in Darien Theft

Pictures from a home security camera led police to charge Casmore Jones of Hamden with larceny in the theft of two packages from in front of a Darien home.

When a thief stole two packages near the front door of a house on Old Kings Highway South in Darien, the homeowner's security camera was watching—and soon police elsewhere were watching, too.

The incident led to the arrest of a Hamden man last week.

Police gave this account of the incident and investigation:

Darien police sent still pictures from the video footage of the April 12 incident to other police departments through the Connecticut Intelligence Center. It turned out that police in Norwalk had arrested someone who looked like the man in the porch. And they'd charged him with a similar crime.

In the Darien case, the two stolen packages, taken at 1:36 p.m., were valued at a total of $112.

Police in Darien applied for an arrest warrant for Casmore Jones, 26, of Plaza Terrace in Hamden, charging him with sixth-degree larceny. By June 18, the warrant was approved by a judge, and police contacted Jones' lawyer, who said he would advise his client to turn himself in. But that never happened.

Police then determined that Jones had an appearance scheduled in state Superior Court in Norwalk on July 10, so he was arrested there. He later was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear July 23 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
