Hamden Man Facing Charges After Motor Vehicle Stop

He was allegedly driving an unregistered car without a license and with a BB gun in the car, according to police.

A traffic stop Tuesday afternoon led to the arrest of a Hamden man on weapons charges after officers allegedly found a BB gun in the car.

Hamden Police Officer Michael DiMaria stopped a car in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Helen Street at about noon Tuesday, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

While DiMaria was talking to the man, identified as Joshua Johnson, 26, of 63 Gorham Ave., Hamden, the officer ran a check and found that Johnson was wanted by state police on charges of failure to appear in court on motor vehicle charges, Smith said.

Johnson also didn't have a valid driver's license and his car was not registered, Smith said.

DiMaria then searched the car and found a silver-handled BB gun, Smith said.

Johnson was charged with weapons in a motor vehicle, operating while under suspension, misuse of plates, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating without insurance.

Johnson was held in lieu of $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Nov. 12.
