Hamden Police Plan Sobriety Checkpoints Tonight

Celebrate the New Year tonight — but don't drink and drive.

It's New Year's Eve, and that means parties, drinking...and police sobriety checkpoints.

The Hamden Police Department will be conducting sobriety checkpoints tonight, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

"These enforcement activities, which will take place at various locations, including Dixwell Avenue, Whitney Avenue, Skiff Street and Mix Avenue, will be conducted on Dec. 31," Smith said in a release Tuesday.

The money for the program comes from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

"The Hamden Police Department’s goal is to spread public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving," Smith said, "along with making the streets of Hamden and surrounding communities safer by arresting those individuals who are driving while intoxicated."
