Hamden Public Works Employee Ticketed After Accident

Two people, including the town employee, were sent to the hospital after the accident Friday afternoon at the intersection of Dixwell and Shepard avenues.

A Hamden Public Works employee was cited Friday afternoon after an accident at the corner of Dixwell and Shepard avenues sent him and another person to the hospital.

The accident happened at about 3:15 p.m., according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith. Edward Urban was driving a Hamden Public Works vehicle with an attached trailer eastbound on Shepard Avenue, Smith said, when he saw a car, also traveling eastbound, in front of him making a left-hand turn.

Urban tried to avoid striking the rear of the vehicle, which was operated by Margaret Yahn, 21, by crossing into the westbound lane, Smith said, which caused the Public Works trailer to strike Yahn’s vehicle.

Urban's vehicle also struck a second vehicle traveling in its proper westbound lane on Shepard Avenue, Smith said. The vehicle, operated by Steven Sorrentino, 21, was broad-sided, which caused it to roll over on its side.

Sorrentino and Urban were both treated at the scene by Hamden Fire Rescue before they were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, Smith said.

Urban, 43, of Hamden, was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the established lane.

Sergeant Lyle Bennett of the Hamden Police Department Traffic Division is continuing the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact him at 203-230-4000.
