Hamden Teen Faces Robbery, Assault Charges

Newton, 18, accused of being part of group that allegedly beat and stole items from a 15-year-old after he exited a school bus.

Hamden police arrested Shamont Newton, 18, on a warrant in connection with an alleged beating and robbery of a 15-year-old after he exited a school bus.

Police investigated an aggravated street robbery in May that occurred in the area of Burke Street and George Street, according to a police press release.

Police investigation revealed that a 15-year-old Hamden resident exited a school bus and was subsequently followed by several individuals.

Police say the group, which was comprised of at least four teens, attacked the 15-year-old, repeatedly punching and kicking him until he fell to the ground.

The attackers allegedly stole the victim's book bag and the sneakers he was wearing, according to the press release.

The 15-year-old sustained injuries to his arms, hands and stomach area, according to police.

After an extensive investigation, Newton was arrested on a warrant.
Newton, 18, of 205 Stanley Rd. in Hamden, was charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy. He was released after posting a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on July 30.
