Convicted murderer Steven Hayes, who is on death row for the 2007 murders of a Cheshire family was found unresponsive in his jail cell at the Northern Correctional Center in Somers Monday morning.

According to a Connecticut Department of Corrections statement issued Monday afternoon, "While conducting a routine tour at approximately 9:35 a.m. on Monday, March 10, 2014, a correctional staff member found Steven Hayes unresponsive in his cell at the Northern Correctional Institution.
"Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures.  The inmate was transported via ambulance to a local area hospital for further treatment."

A department spokesman said because of a departmental investigation into the incident, he would not comment on whether Hayes suffered a medical incident.

Hayes was the only inmate in the cell at the time and is reported to be in stable condition, according to the department's statement.

In 2011, Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky were sentenced to die for the murders of  Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and her daughters, Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11, during an invasion of their Cheshire home in 2007. Dr. William Petit was seriously injured in the attack. He has since remarried.

In 2012, Hayes said he wanted to end his legal appeals and "go to the death chamber," according to reports. Hayes had said that he was abandoning his appeals because he is being subjected to "cruel and unusual punishment" by prison guards.

The 2007 attack led to the defeat of a bill to outlaw the death penalty in Connecticut and sparked tougher state laws for repeat offenders and home invasions.

Sorry Scumbag....what the Petit family suffered was cruel and unusual punishment. What you are suffering is justice. Hope you live for 50 years you creep. No easy way out for you. Your a piece of garbage.

Tax payers will be flipping the hospital bill for Mr Hayes ...very frustrating. I look at this way, if he wants to end his life then I think he should make the next attempt count. Knowing Dr Petit, he deserves some solitude, not a reminder every day that these animals exist
