At about 8:30 a.m., police got a report of a burglary in progress at the residence, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

The person making the complaint told police that when he was checking his mother's home he found a man sleeping in her bed, Smth said. He immediately left the home and called police, Smith said.

Turns out the man was a relative of the homeowner who had broke a window to get in, Smith said. Officers Robert Dunham and Stephen Baris found David Alter, 18, of 15 Harding Street, Hamden, sleeping in a rear bedroom.

Alter was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief. He was held in lieu of $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 10.
