Man Allegedly Uses Lit Cigarette To Burn Girlfriend

Seventeen-year-old West Haven suffered injuries in the assault, according to police.

A Hamden man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly burning his teenage girlfriend with a lit cigarette, according to police.

The girlfriend, a West Haven resident, met with Officer Michael Pantera Tuesday to report the assault, Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith said.

"The 17 year-old victim advised police that at approximately 3 a.m. she was involved in a verbal altercation with her boyfriend, Nicholas Vermiglio Jr," Smith said in a release. "The argument progressed into a physical altercation, in which Vermiglio allegedly burned her chest with a lit cigarette, punched her several times and pulled her hair."

When she got to Vermiglio's house, he hit her in the leg with a metal object and stabbed her with car keys, Smith said. Officers saw the burns and scars on her body, he said, and the damage to several personal items.

Vermiglio, 20, of 51 Hideaway Lane, was charged with second-degree assault. He posted $1,000 bond and was arraigned Wednesday in Meriden Superior Court.

Same story, different names. Men abusing women and getting away with it. A $1000 bond for burning a woman with a cigarette and punching her is disgraceful. Give this POS a couple years, and he will kill someone, probably his girlfriend, then everyone will look at this history and say why was he allowed to progress to this point. It is because of our pathetic laws and prosecutors and judges who are unwilling to hold these men accountable.

Ellen is right! What's up with $1,000 bond on someone so obviously violent? Haven't we learned anything from Tracy Thurman? Get people out of prison who are there for doing drugs and make room for violent offenders like this and give them significant time. Prisons and jails are overcrowded because the judicial system looks at selling pot as a more serious offense than burning your girlfriend with a lit cigarette. Jail and prison should be for VIOLENT offenders who are true threats to society, not someone lighting up a joint. Otherwise because there's no room to incarcerate him, idiots like this will be free to continue committing crimes like this. And like Ellen said, at some point he'll probably kill someone.

what is a 17 year old girl from West Haven doing in Hamden at 3 am? "Parents do you know where your child is?"
