He was apparently trying to cross the street Saturday night when he was hit, according to police.

A Meriden man was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a car while  apparently trying to cross Whitney Avenue at Home Place.

At about 9:45 p.m. police got a report of a pedestrian struck, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronals Smith. When officers arrived, they found Manuel Jesus Bonete - Canar, 58, of Meriden, lying in the roadway, he said.

Hamden Fire Rescue treated Bonete-Canar at the scene, Smith said, and he was then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he died from his injuries.
