A Cheshire resident was almost robbed at gunpoint Monday while riding a bicycle on the Farmington Canal Trail in the area of Morse Street, and now a New Haven man is facing charges, according to police.
At about noon on Monday Officer Paul Calamita of the Hamden Police Department was approached by a Cheshire resident who told him that two people tried to rob him at gunpoint, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.
"The victim reported that as he was riding his bicycle northbound on the Farmington Canal Trail, in the vicinity of Morse Street, Smith said. "He was approached by two individuals, one who was brandishing a firearm. The Cheshire resident quickly pedaled away to safety."
Moments later, Officer Angela Hall saw a man in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Morse Street who fit the descrpition of the suspects, Smith said.
Jose Maria Islas, 34, of 911 Blake St., New Haven, was charged with Conspiracy to Commit Robbery in the Second Degree and Breach of Peace. He was held in lieu of $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on July 12.
