New Haven Man Facing Gun Charges

Man arrested this week while he was sitting in a North Carolina jail.

A New Haven man was arrested this week while in a North Carolina jail, for an incident that happened here last month.

On March 7, police conducted an investigation in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Arch Street, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith, that included the execution of a search warrant on a car there. When officers searched the car, they found a .22 caliber revolver, Smith said, and that find led to the application for a warrant for Jamal Dunlap, 20, of 195 Bellvue Road, New Haven.

Dunlap was arrested Tuesday in High Point, North Carolina, Smith said, where he was incarcerated at Guilford County Jail. Dunlap waived extradition, Smith said, and officers brought him back to Hamden.

Dunlap was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and weapons in a motor vehicle. He is due to appear in Meriden Superior Court May 6.

He was also served with two outstanding warrants that charge violation of probation and first-degree failure to appear, Smith said.
