Police: Craigslist Sale Goes Bad When Seller Robs Buyer

A Meriden man responding to an add on Craigslist ended up the victim of a robbery Sunday afternoon, according to police.

A Meriden resident responding to an ad on Craigslist for an all-terrain vehicle was robbed by the people purported to be selling it, according to police.

The victim went to a home on Tierney Road Sunday afternoon to look at the ATV, according to Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith

"Upon arrival, the victim was instructed to walk to the rear of an unoccupied residence to complete the transaction," Smith said in a release Monday. "He was then approached by four additional individuals, one who placed what appeared to be a firearm to his head.

"The individuals subsequently stole his wallet, which contained a large sum of money, credit cards and personal paperwork," Smith said.

The gun turned out to be a BB gun, Smith said, and the victim was able to get it from the suspect, after which the suspects took off.

"Officer Jason Venditto and his K-9 partner “Viking” conducted a track, which led officers to a Wayfarer Street address," Smith said, where the 17 year-old New Haven resident was arrested.

He was charged with first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, second-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny. He is scheduled to appear in Juvenile Court in New Haven on Jan. 24.

The Hamden Police Department Detective Division is continuing the investigation, Smith said.
