Police Make Arrest in String of Thefts from Gyms

Maine man being held on numerous charges for thefts that happened between April and July.

A Maine man is accused of committing numerous thefts at local gyms over the past four months.

Between April and July of this year, the Police Department has investigated numerous larcenies committed in locker rooms and from motor vehicles that were parked in the gym parking lots, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

Items stolen include money, jewelry, electronic equipment, credit cards, ATM cards and personal items, Smith said.

On Wednesday, after a lengthy investigation by Detective John Marks, police arrested John Wiechman, 23, of 34 Narragansett Trail, Buxton, Maine, on the strength of 11 outstanding arrest warrants, Smith said.

Wiechman was charged with 10 counts of theft of a credit card, 10 counts of sixth-degree larceny, five counts of third-degree identity theft, five counts of illegal use of a credit card, four counts of receiving goods/services illegally obtained, fifth-degree larceny, fourth-degree larceny, criminal attempt to receive goods/services illegally obtained and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny.

Wiechman was held in lieu of $110,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court Aug. 19.
