Police: Stabbing at Stop and Shop After Employees Argue

Police and Fire Rescue personnel rushed to Stop and Shop on Dixwell Avenue Sunday afternoon after an alleged fight between two employees turned physical.

At about 5:15 p.m. Sunday police received the report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the store at 2335 Dixwell Ave. across from the Hamden Mart.

Police found one employee with stab wounds to the leg and rib cage area, according to Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith. The victim, Barrington Beckford, 30, of 370 Dixwell Ave., New Haven, told police that his co-worker, Cedric Gambrell, 29, of 81 Beacon St., Hamden, had stabbed him, Smith said.

Hamden Fire Rescue treated him at the scene and he was then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Smith said.

"Beckford and Gambrel became involved in a verbal dispute, which turned physical," Smith said. "Gambrel then allegedly stabbed Beckford with a knife from the meat department."

Gambrell was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. He was held in lieu of $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 12.

Beckford was charged with second-degree breach of peace. Beckford also is due in court Sept. 12.
