Post-Hockey Loss Leads to Five Arrests at Quinnipiac

A "volatile gathering" at the Quinnipiac University Mount Carmel campus after Saturday's national championship loss to Yale led to five arrests, according to police.

Police made several arrests on the Quinnipiac University campus Saturday night after the university's men's hockey team lost the national championship game to rival Yale.

At about 10 p.m., police were called to the campus on Mount Carmel Avenue, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith, where several hundred "agitated" students had gathered in the area known as the "Quad."

"Many students within the group were throwing beer cans, plastic bottles and other objects into the crowd," Smith said. "Several large concrete trash cans were knocked over."

During what Smith described as the "volatile gathering," one student, identified as  Maxx Goldblatt, 18, of 1411 Avenue V in Brooklyn, New York, climbed a light pole and shook it violently, Smith said, and "as the pole sparked to the ground into the crowd, live electrical wires were exposed, endangering the large gathering of students. Quinnipiac University quickly summoned a staff electrician who cut the power."

Goldblatt was charged with third-degree criminal mischief. He was released on a promise to appear in Meriden Superior Court on April 26.

Another student, Jake Striefler, 19, of 7 Gloria Drive, Allendale, New Jersey, also attempted to pull another light pole to the ground, Smith said, and tried to get away by running into the crowd by police caught him immediately.

Striefler also was charged with third-degree criminal mischief and is due in court on April 26.

Another student, Connor Powers, 20, also was responsible for damaging a light pole, Smith said, and was charged with third-degree larceny. He also is due in court April 26.

A short time later police got a report of a student who other students were detaining because he had allegedly stolen money and electronic equipment from another student, Smith said.

When police responded to the campus dormitory, they learned that Steven Alterisio, 20, of 344 Union Boulevard, Totowa, New Jersey, had “head-butted” his girlfriend, Smith said.

Alterisio was charged with sixth-degree larceny and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 26.

After that, police got a report school security was holding an allegedly drunk person on the main campus.

"As Quinnipiac University Public Safety personnel were assisting the individual, identified as Zachary Alvey, into an awaiting ambulance, he pushed an officer," Smith said.

Alvey, 19, of 50 Cleveland Road, Caldwell, New Jersey, was charged with second-degree breach of peace. He also is scheduled to appear in court on April 26.
