Police learned of the alleged scam this week when an elderly resident reported that a man called her offering the prize, on the condition that she send money over seas to secure the winnings.

Investigators determined this was a fraudulent solicitation that is being reported to law enforcement agencies daily, involving suspected organized criminal groups who usually operate internationally.

"These groups will use phone and Internet searches to obtain telephone numbers of intended victims," police said.

Police offered this advice: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
